Week 05 - Chest Proxy and Game Model

This week we were given a list of references to base our model off of to make a chest, barrel, or crate. I chose to do a chest. I somewhat regret my decision because I was not able to work on the assignment over the weekend so this piece seems to be at a lower quality than what I normally produce. However, I still put my mind to it and tried my best to get an accurate chest somewhat based on the image.

Week 04 - ZBrush Hammer

This week we were given the task of making a hammer in ZBrush using reference images. I chose the Harley Quinn-esque one thinking it would be a challenge. I was right. In the end, I had about 28 million polygons on the hammer. I added scrapes and dents to apply a used-look to it. My favorite part was trying to make the cloth on the handle.

Week 02 - Minecraft Level

This week our Cohort was tasked with creating a "Minecraft" level in UE5 using basic shapes and our own textures. I decided to create a cave with a furnace and flowing lava as light sources.

All the textures are 16x16. The plant textures are placed on a plane and have 2 types of opacity.

Project 1 (Part 2) 3D/2D Sprite in UE5 and Maya

Unbeknownst to me, we needed to do both the 2D AND 3D pixel art. After some consideration of different characters to model in the pixel-style, I decided on one of my favorite Pokemon, Chandelure. Below is the pixel sprite used for it in Pokemon Black/White and Black 2/White 2.

Making Chandelure was NOT easy. It's sprite is 96x96, which means that in order to create a texture plane to work on, I needed to create a 9600x9600 plane with 96 horizontal and vertical divisions. Once that was created, I began to place down each and every block. There are about 1400 individual pixels in this one sprite. I started with the body, then went to the arms, flames, crown and finally the head. Unlit, the sprite looks like this:

To differentiate the parts of the body and the flames, I made certain materials emissive (to give off light). These areas included the flames, eyes, and the fire within the body.

After adding a bit of light, I present to you: Pixel Chandelure.

In total, 14 different materials were used to create this pixel art (most of them being instances). The M_Chandelure was used for guiding placement of each pixel.

Project 1: 2D/3D Sprite in UE5 and Maya

The first Cohort 21 assignment of the fall. The goal was to create either a 2D or 3D sprite using both Unreal and Maya. Professor Nick showed us an example of a Super Mario 2D pixel art and a small spaceship 3D pixel block scene.

The 3D scene interested me much more than the 2D one so I began pursuing. I was almost immediately set on the idea of a giant pixel mushroom in a Minecraft-like style.

Not going to lie, I was unaware that I was meant to take progress shots as I was working on this piece. I almost lost the entire thing when I deleted the blueprint by accident (DON'T DO THAT FYI). I was luckily able to find it in the OneDrive recycling bin.

Anyways, here's the finished product (along with a GIF). (Also I don't know how to write blogs)

(Give the GIF a few seconds to load)

Gods of War Check-In 6: The Final Push

This final sprint was the last push for the project. My goal was optimizing the rock wall even more, making the rocks bigger, and rigging t...
